Overview
The EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol) code, also called the auth code or transfer secret, is a password that proves you are authorised to transfer a domain away from a registrar. This article explains how to obtain it for a domain registered at ALYPOD and how to use it.
Why you need it
Registrars require the EPP code before releasing a domain to a different registrar. It prevents someone from hijacking your domain. Without it, a "transfer away" cannot be approved.
Before you begin
- Access to the ALYPOD account that owns or manages the domain.
- The domain must be unlocked (not in transfer-lock / registrar-lock state).
- The domain must be at least 60 days past registration or the last transfer.
Steps
- Log in to account.alypod.com and open Domains.
- Select the domain you want to transfer.
- Find the Transfer or Registrar lock section.
- If the domain shows as locked, disable the registrar lock / transfer lock first.
- Click Get EPP code (sometimes labelled "Auth code" or "Transfer secret").
- For security, the code may be emailed to the registrant contact rather than displayed. Check that inbox, including spam.
- Give the code to the new registrar when you start the transfer. It is case-sensitive, so copy it exactly.
Using the code
At the receiving registrar, start a transfer, enter the domain and paste the EPP code. They will email the registrant address an approval link; approve it to let the transfer proceed.
Security notes
- Treat the EPP code like a password; anyone with it and access to the registrant email can transfer the domain.
- Re-enable the registrar lock after a transfer completes to prevent unauthorised moves.
- If you did not request a code and receive one unexpectedly, change your account password and contact support.
Troubleshooting
- Problem: The EPP code is rejected. Solution: Re-copy it exactly, check for trailing spaces, and request a fresh code — old codes can expire.
- Problem: You cannot unlock the domain. Solution: Check whether a recent registration or transfer imposes a 60-day lock, and wait until it passes.
