Overview
Snapshots are point-in-time, read-only copies of your data. On ALYPOD Cloud you get
snapshots on CPU Pods (disk-level) and on Storage Boxes. They are the fastest way to undo
a bad change — an accidental rm, a failed upgrade or a corrupted file — without waiting
for a full restore from off-site backup.
Because snapshots are stored on the same platform, treat them as a convenience layer, not your only backup. Still keep an off-site copy following the 3-2-1 rule.
Before you begin
- A CPU Pod or Storage Box with snapshots enabled in the ALYPOD Console.
- Enough free space on the Pod/Box to hold the snapshot.
- Console access at account.alypod.com.
Steps
Create a snapshot
- Open the ALYPOD Console and go to Storage → Storage Boxes (or Compute → CPU Pods for disk snapshots).
- Select the resource and open the Snapshots tab.
- Click Create snapshot, give it a descriptive name such as
before-nginx-upgrade, and confirm. Creation may take a few minutes depending on data size.
You can also create Pod disk snapshots directly from the Pod's Backups tab.
Restore a snapshot
- Open the Snapshots tab and select the snapshot to restore.
- Click Restore. On a Storage Box this replaces the current volume content with the snapshot state.
- For CPU Pods, use Restore to roll the disk back, or Clone to new Pod to test the snapshot without touching production.
- Confirm the operation and wait for it to complete. Check your files afterwards:
bash
ls -la /mnt/storagebox
df -h
Automate snapshots
Enable Automated snapshots with a retention policy (for example daily, keep 7). This creates rolling restore points automatically so you always have a recent one.
Troubleshooting
- Problem: Snapshot fails with "not enough space". Solution: Remove old snapshots or free space on the volume.
- Problem: Restore is slow on a large volume. Solution: Snapshot recovery writes many blocks; expect minutes for hundreds of GB.
- Problem: Restore rolled back newer files. Solution: Snapshots revert the whole volume — use Clone to new Pod if you only need a few files.
