Overview

Nameservers are the servers that answer queries for your domain's DNS records. Changing them tells the internet where to look up your domain. This article explains when to change nameservers and how to do it, both for domains registered at ALYPOD and for domains hosted elsewhere.

When to change nameservers

  • You want ALYPOD to host the DNS zone for a domain registered elsewhere.
  • You are moving DNS from one provider to another.
  • You are pointing a domain at a service that requires its own nameservers.

If your domain is already registered at ALYPOD and you only need to add or edit records, you do not need to change nameservers.

Changing nameservers for an ALYPOD-managed domain

  1. Log in to account.alypod.com and open Domains.
  2. Select the domain and choose Nameservers (or DNS management).
  3. Choose one of the two modes:
  • Use ALYPOD nameservers: the values supplied in your account are applied so we can manage the zone for you.
  • Use custom nameservers: enter two or more nameservers provided by the service you are moving DNS to.
  1. Save the change.

Changing nameservers for a domain registered elsewhere

  1. Log in to your registrar's control panel.
  2. Find the domain's nameserver settings and replace the existing entries with the ALYPOD nameserver values shown in your account.
  3. Provide at least two nameservers where possible.

After the change

Propagation can take up to 48 hours, though it is often much faster. Check progress with:

bash dig NS example.com +short dig @1.1.1.1 NS example.com +short

Once the new nameservers answer, you can manage that domain's records in the ALYPOD Console.

Troubleshooting

  • Problem: Changes are not visible. Solution: Wait and re-check with a public resolver; cached TTLs can delay updates.
  • Problem: The site went down after the change. Solution: Make sure the new nameservers already contain the records your site needs before switching, or switch back until the zone is ready.
