Overview
Ubuntu Server is one of the most popular Linux distributions for web hosting and cloud workloads. On ALYPOD you do not run a hardware installer — you choose an Ubuntu template in the ALYPOD Console and the image is provisioned for you. This article covers deployment and first steps.
Before you begin
- An active ALYPOD account at account.alypod.com.
- An SSH public key (recommended).
- Awareness that installing an OS erases the Pod's existing disk contents.
Steps
- Sign in to account.alypod.com and open the ALYPOD Console.
- Click Deploy Pod and pick a plan (Shared, Dedicated, NVMe or ARM).
- Choose a data-centre region near your users.
- Under OS template, select Ubuntu Server and an LTS release such as 22.04 or 24.04 (choose the aarch64 variant for ARM Pods).
- Add your SSH public key or set a root password.
- Optionally paste a cloud-init script.
- Confirm and create the Pod; wait for status Running.
First steps after boot
- Log in:
bash
ssh [email protected]
- Update packages:
bash
apt update && apt upgrade -y
- Set the hostname and timezone:
bash
hostnamectl set-hostname web01
timedatectl set-timezone UTC
- Create a non-root sudo user (see related articles) and install what you need:
bash
adduser deploy
usermod -aG sudo deploy
Choosing the right release
- LTS (22.04, 24.04): long support windows — use these for production.
- Interim releases: newer packages but short support — use for testing only.
Troubleshooting
- Problem: SSH login fails after deploy. Solution: make sure the correct public key was selected, or reset the root password in the console.
- Problem: ARM Pod rejects the package. Solution: some packages lack arm64
builds; check availability with
apt policy <package>. - Problem: Pod does not reach the network. Solution: inspect the VNC console and confirm DHCP/netplan config.
